Thelma and Lowell's Diary: Dec. 12, 1943
He works on minesweepers; they see Bette Davis in 'Watch on the Rhine'
Lowell was back at the flashing station today working on YMS’s, which was shorthand for Yard Mine Sweepers. More than 500 of these wood-hulled ships were built in U.S. shipyards during the war, according to Wikipedia. The one pictured here was launched in 1943 and was one of a small number transferred to the Soviet navy for use against the Japanese. The YMS were versatile ships that were used by the navy until 1969.
Bette Davis and Paul Lucas gave memorable performances in Watch on the Rhine, based on a play by Lillian Hellman adapted by her long-time lover Dashiell Hammett.
