Lowell got off work at 1 p.m. today, had a hair cut, and bought some varnish and a brush. He spent the rest of the day making a corner nick-nack shelf for Thelma, who “didn’t feel so good with cold.”

Nick-nack shelves are meant for just what they sound like — the display of small ornamental pieces in the home. I bet Lowell’s shelf was a fairly utilitarian one, like this one being offered on Etsy.

In Tehran, FDR made a brief inspection tour of Camp Amirabad, where he had spent the night. He spoke briefly in prepared remarks to soldiers in the hospital there, addressed troops, and then left for the airport and his return trip to Cairo.
