Lowell, who must have been exhausted when he made his brief diary notation, simply wrote, “Worked 17 hrs.” Whew! What was going on? A war?

The pages of the Times-Picayune were packed with advertisements for those still scurrying around shopping on the Wednesday before Christmas. The news stories, though, grimly reminded readers that the war was still on, and likely to get worse before it got better. The top brass of the U.S. and the U.K. were already planning the D-Day invasion that would happen in six months.
