Lowell didn’t have to go to work until late today, so he and Thelma got up early, went to the grocery store, and cleaned up their apartment, which Thelma always refers to as “the house.” Lowell took a nap in the afternoon. They spent a considerable sum on “eats” — $5.50, which translates into almost a hundred dollars in today’s money.
That evening, they had their celebration, opening the gifts they had received in the mail — “lots of nice ones” — including “the game from the folks,” which they played before Lowell had to leave for work.
We know Thelma and Lowell love to play cards. I have a guess as to which game “the folks” had sent.
