Thelma and Lowell's Diary: Jan. 16, 1943
They have friends for dinner; Lowell ranges his first submarines
Thelma and Lowell had their first dinner guests in their apartment, inviting his co-worker Jim Southerland and wife Ruth over. “Spent the day preparing things for dinner,” Thelma wrote. Her expenditures that day included $1.90 for “eats” and 67 cents for candy. When Lowell came home from work at 3, he pitched in to help. Apparently the dinner party was a big success. After eating, they played cards. “We drank Cokes and had lots of fun,” Thelma concluded. “They left about 12:00.”
Almost as an afterthought, she wrote, “Lowell ranged his first subs.”
