Thelma and Lowell's Diary: Jan. 18, 1943
They eat a midnight lunch; FDR and Churchill confer in Casablanca
Lowell’s shift changed this week, and today he worked from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Tomorrow he will work from 3 to 11 p.m. What a long day for him! Thelma filled the hours he was gone by straightening up the house, sewing, listening to the radio and writing letters. “We ate a lunch when he got home at 12:30,” she wrote. I am assuming that is 12:30 a.m.! She also wrote that Lowell then read the mail. I don’t know how he kept his eyes open.
The photo above of Churchill, Roosevelt and their military advisors is from the Imperial War Museums of Great Britain. There are more details about what was going on in Casablanca today, but they are behind the paywall.
