Lowell again wrote the diary entry today, noting that Thelma’s ankle was better but she was still staying off it. Maybe that’s why their “eats” bill for today was $3.40. Did he pick up lunch or dinner at a restaurant perhaps?

The newspapers contained news of the imminent victory for the Allies on the Pacific island of Guadalcanal, which had been the focus of fierced fighting since the previous August. The photo above was taken by a U.S. Navy sailor.
