Thelma and Lowell's Diary: July 24, 1943
They beat the heat with ice cream sundaes; railroad gives advice to civilian passengers
Thelma and her best friend Vangy made an early-morning trip to the meat market and grocery store, then both cleaned house, including mopping the floors. Vangy and Joe went away “for the weekend,” even though it was already Saturday. It was a very warm day and Lowell and Thelma took a walk that evening and enjoyed ice cream sundaes at a place called Best’s.
As Thelma and Lowell had learned during their recent trip home to Ohio, riding a train before the war was quite different from riding one during the war. A large display ad in today’s New Orleans Times-Picayune from Southern Pacific Railroad gave some warning of what to expect.
