Thelma and Lowell's Diary: July 29, 1943
They get a tire and bananas; snowy flight deck photographed in the North Atlantic
Thelma did some housecleaning and laundry today — she lists a dust mop, price 86 cents, among her purchases. She joined Vangy and her husband Joe for a trip uptown to pick up his tire. “Got bananas also,” she wrote. She continued embroidering on the porch that evening, talking with her friends, and for the first time she wrote, “I didn’t wait up.” Poor Lowell!
The humorous postcard here, which dates from the 1940s, was found on eBay. Thelma and Lowell were lucky in that regard, probably because their apartment was too small to handle much company and travel from Ohio was so difficult.
Even though it was hot in most of the nation that day, a photograph was snapped on a North Atlantic aircraft carrier that would put a chill into anyone. To learn about it, you’ll need to be a paid subscriber.
