We can guess from Thelma’s purchases today that they went shopping. She bought a pair of scissors for $1.81, a skillet for $1.76, gloves for $1.54, a pillow top for $1.03 and two pairs of shoes for $2 each. She must have used coupons for both herself and Lowell to get the shoes, or else they were not made of leather.

A number of ads in the New Orleans Times-Picayune indicated that the rationing of consumer goods and food to supply those fighting the war was putting a hurting on.
