Lowell picked up the fountain pen today and wrote in the diary. He had gotten his paycheck, which netted $84.26 after income tax, retirement and war bond deductions, paid the rent of $16.50, and paid a nickel to cash the check and a dime to by a copy of the Times-Picayune.

It was a rainy day in New Orleans. While Thelma sewed a dress and baked a cake, Lowell read the newspaper.
