While a hard rain fell most of the afternoon and night, Thelma busied herself by cleaning up the apartment and making some baked beans. She wrote letters and mailed them, then stopped in to visit with Mrs. Weiner. She listened to the radio while waiting up for Lowell to come home from work that night.

New Orleans was full of women who had men in the service or working in defense industries, looking for things to do. The USO and organizations in the city organized activities for them and their men.
