Thelma and Lowell's Diary: March 31, 1943
They start a Victory Garden; Red Cross war drive chair begs for donations
Lowell and Thelma spent a few hours this afternoon readying the ground for a Victory Garden. Thelma did the raking, Lowell the spading. Coming from the bread basket of the Midwest, they were accustomed to agricultural pursuits, and no doubt hoped to both aid the war effort and save themselves some money by growing fresh vegetables. This political cartoon, which appeared in the Monroe News-Star on March 29, shows Hitler biting his nails as a warrior representing the Allied Offensive strides toward him, arm in arm with an adoring woman representing spring. Under his arm are plans for a Victory Garden.
