Thelma and Lowell's Diary: May 26, 1943
They buy a pack of signal cards; the president of Liberia spends night at White House
Lowell worked in the garden today before going to work. Thelma spent some time on the porch with Vangy and her husband Joe, sewed on her sewing machine, and listened to the radio while waiting for him to come home. She lists “signal cards” as a purchase today, for 18 cents. I expect she or Lowell bought a pack of these, perhaps in anticipation of his being accepted for officer training in the Navy. This set is being offered on eBay.
At the White House, history was made as the Roosevelts welcomed the president and president-elect of Liberia as their overnight guests. If you are a paid subscriber, you can find out why this was so significant. Upgrade to paid, for the cost of just $5 a month, by clicking below.
