As Memorial Day weekend began, Thelma picked a few beans from their Victory Garden and Lowell got word that his application for Navy officers’ training had been received in Washington, D.C. This cartoon on the front page of the Madison County (Louisiana) News was a reminder of the cost of freedom, from the Civil War to the Spanish-American War to the Great War, with crosses representing the recent lives of soldiers lost in the battles of World War II.
