Thelma got hold of the fountain pen today for the first time in more than a month. She wrote that she went to town to mail her sister Reva’s birthday gift and did some Christmas shopping. She spent $6.67 on gifts, equivalent to $118 today.

The death of the butcher found in a shallow grave deepened today, with another front page story in the Times-Picayune describing it as a “mystery.” To read on, you’ll need to be a paid subscriber.
