Thelma and Lowell's Diary: Nov. 23, 1943
They do more shopping; the war did not stop for Thanksgiving
Two days before Thanksgiving, Thelma and Lowell’s diary contained only their expense list, including moneys spent for Christmas gifts for Lowell’s sister Donnabel and other female family members. The snapshot of a Thanksgiving table above, offered on eBay, caught my eye because the hand-painted Franciscan Apple china, introduced in 1940, is the pattern my paternal grandmother used. I inherited my grandmother’s dishes and use them on holidays. I love the way the handles on the cup and teapot are made to look and feel like twigs! The picture below of vintage Apple dishes, showing the fine detail, is from Wikimedia Commons.
Today’s Times-Picayune was full of ads aimed at Christmas shoppers but the reality of a world at war was evident on every page of the newspaper, not just in the news, but in the advertisements too. To read on, you’ll need to upgrade to paid. I’ll be thankful if you do!
