Lowell got his “duplicate glasses without tint” today, paying the balance of the cost. Altogether, the glasses cost him $16, or about $285. That was a pretty penny then, but anyone who has paid $600 or more for a pair of prescription glasses lately would consider them a bargain.

There weren’t a lot of choices in styles of glasses in the 1940s, and even they were impacted by the war. Paid subscribers can read on about styles and a man I interviewed who served as an optician in the army in New Guinea.
