Today Lowell’s diary had a cryptic comment about Christmas. “Call for cards (Christmas) Holmes,” he wrote, and underneath “ — not there.”

I have no idea what this means. But a much clearer Christmas message was sent to President Roosevelt’s farm manager in Hyde Park, New York from his secretary, Grace Tully: FDR wanted Christmas trees harvested from his farm to be provided for four special people.
