Thelma and Lowell's Diary: Sept. 23, 1943
Not much doing at their place; Elliott Roosevelt prepares to dump his wife
This week begins a period when Thelma and Lowell don’t share much in their diary except daily expenses. Today it was only fourteen cents spent on rides. Even President Roosevelt’s calendar was empty, as he was enjoying a few days of rest at his family home in Hyde Park, New York. His son, Col. Elliott Roosevelt, had just left with his wife, Ruth, and their three children. He would soon dump her for the movie starlet Faye Emerson, who would become wife No. 3 of a total of five.
Being married to a Roosevelt at that time was comparable to being married to a member of the British royal family today.
