Thelma and Lowell's Diary: September 12, 1943
They have a chicken dinner and see a movie; Mickey and Judy are coming to town
Sundays were leisurely in Lowell and Thelma’s world, even when he had to work third shift, as he did today. They slept until 10 a.m., read the funny papers in the Times-Picayune and went to see the movie China at the National Theater before he left for work. Vangie came over to visit that evening, “then I read after doing all my dishes,” Thelma wrote, concluding, “wrote a letter to the folks.”
I have a feeling Lowell had seen this movie, starring Loretta Young and Alan Ladd, back in June, and I wrote a lengthy post about it then. Ladd’s character was the inspiration for Indiana Jones.
As the Third War Bond drive picked up steam, newspaper pages were peppered with reminders to back the troops, as well as the announcement of a “Hollywood Cavalcade” headed to New Orleans. There was also news on the garbage strike. To read on, you’ll need to be a paid subscriber.
